Assan Barrage Bird Sanctuary

Assan Barrage, roughly 40 km from Dehradun near the town of Dakpathar, is Uttarakhand's premier birdwatching destination — a reservoir that draws a striking diversity of migratory and resident bird species.

Formed by a barrage on the Yamuna and Asan rivers, the reservoir's shallow wetland areas and surrounding vegetation create ideal habitat for waterfowl, particularly during winter migration season when species travel south from Central Asia and Siberia to escape harsher winters further north.

Over 300 bird species have been recorded at Assan Barrage, including bar-headed geese, ruddy shelducks, various duck species, ospreys, and a range of resident waders and raptors — a genuinely serious birdwatching site by Indian standards, not just a casual wildlife stop.

Best Time for Birdwatching

November to March is peak season, when migratory species are present in the largest numbers. Early mornings offer the calmest water conditions and most active bird behaviour, before the heat and any boat traffic pick up later in the day.

Bring binoculars — this is a site that rewards patient observation over quick sightseeing. The area is developed as a conservation reserve with designated viewing points, and it's an easy half-day trip from Dehradun given the short drive, making it simple to combine with other attractions on the same side of the city.
