The Forest Research Institute — universally known as FRI — is one of Dehradun's defining landmarks, and one of the finest examples of Greco-Roman colonial architecture anywhere in India.
A Working Institute, Not Just a Monument
Established in 1906, FRI's main building was completed in 1929 and constructed almost entirely without steel girders — a genuinely remarkable engineering feat that still impresses visitors today. It remains an active research institution and deemed university under the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, meaning the grounds you walk through are a living campus, not a preserved relic.
Six Museums Worth the Visit Alone

Beyond the Main Building
The wider 450-hectare campus includes botanical gardens, an arboretum, and long shaded walking paths that see far fewer visitors than the main lawn — worth exploring if you have more than an hour or two.
