Paragliding hotspots, operator tips and safety notes for flying over Uttarakhand's scenic valleys.
Uttarakhand's paragliding scene centres on one location above all others: the ridge overlooking Rishikesh's Ganga valley, where thermal conditions and altitude combine to create some of the most reliable tandem-flying weather in northern India.
Most commercial paragliding operates from a launch site near Kunjapuri or nearby ridges above Rishikesh, with landing near the Ganga riverbank. Tandem flights — where you're strapped in alongside a certified pilot — are the standard option for first-timers and require no prior experience.
A typical tandem session runs 15-30 minutes depending on the package, gliding over forested hillsides with the Ganga visible below. Operators handle all equipment; you just need closed-toe shoes and a willingness to run a few steps at takeoff.
October to June offers the most consistent flying conditions, with the clearest thermals typically in the cooler months (November-February) and warmer, hazier conditions in late spring. Monsoon season (July-September) generally halts operations due to unpredictable winds and rain.
Choose operators registered with the state adventure tourism board rather than informal roadside vendors — certification matters more here than price. Costs vary by flight duration and altitude gained, and advance booking is recommended during peak winter weekends when demand is highest.
