Robber's Cave, known locally as Guchhupani, is one of the most distinctive natural attractions in Dehradun — a narrow limestone gorge with a cold stream running directly through the cave floor. Unlike most sightseeing stops in the city, this one is an activity in itself: you walk through the water rather than around it.
Why It's Called Robber's Cave
Local legend holds that dacoits once used the cave's narrow, water-filled passage to disappear from pursuers, since the stream vanishes underground for a stretch before reappearing further down the gorge — hence "Guchhupani," meaning hidden water in Hindi. Whatever the truth of the old stories, the name has stuck.
What the Walk Is Actually Like
Expect ankle-to-knee-deep water for most of the roughly 600-metre walk, with sheer rock walls on either side and sections narrow enough that you'll need to turn sideways. It's cold, genuinely scenic, and a favourite for photography given the interplay of light and flowing water.
Best Time to Go
March to June and September to November are the safest, most comfortable windows. Monsoon season (July to early September) should be avoided — water levels can rise suddenly, and the site is sometimes closed for safety.
