Dehradun is home to one of the most significant concentrations of Tibetan Buddhist institutions outside Tibet itself, anchored by Mindrolling Monastery in the Clement Town area of the city.

Mindrolling Monastery — The Main Draw

Re-established in Dehradun in the 1960s by monks in exile from the original Mindrolling Monastery in Tibet, this campus has grown into one of the largest centres for Nyingma Buddhist study outside its homeland. Its centrepiece, the Great Stupa, stands roughly 220 feet tall — among the tallest stupas in the world — surrounded by immaculately maintained gardens open to all visitors regardless of religious background.

What a Visit Involves

Beyond the stupa, the complex includes a large seated Buddha statue, active prayer halls, and rows of prayer wheels visitors are welcome to spin while walking the grounds. Dress modestly and be prepared to remove your shoes before entering the prayer halls.

Why It's Worth the Trip

For travellers whose Dehradun itinerary otherwise leans heavily on Hindu temples and natural attractions, the monastery offers a genuinely different, more contemplative experience — and one of the most photogenic, peaceful settings in the entire city.

The monastery sits about 8-10 km from Dehradun's city centre. Pair a visit here with nearby Forest Research Institute for a full half-day of heritage sightseeing.
