Tapkeshwar Temple Dehradun

Tapkeshwar Temple is Dehradun's most significant Shiva shrine, and one of the very few cave temples in northern India where the Shivling itself sits inside a natural rock cavern.

A Temple Tied to the Mahabharata

The temple's name comes from "tapak" — to drip — referring to the natural spring water that continuously falls from the cave ceiling onto the Shivling below. Local tradition holds that Guru Dronacharya, teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas, meditated here, and that his son Ashwatthama was born nearby.

What to Expect

A short walk along a stream leads to the cave entrance, where the atmosphere shifts immediately — cool, dim, and genuinely ancient-feeling compared to a typical temple hall. During Maha Shivratri, usually in February or March, the site transforms into one of the region's busiest pilgrimage gatherings, with an overnight fair drawing large crowds.

Visiting Respectfully

Dress modestly and expect to remove your shoes before entering. Photography inside the immediate sanctum is generally restricted out of respect for active worship — check with temple staff on arrival.
