River rafting on the Ganga is one of the defining adventure experiences in Uttarakhand, with Rishikesh serving as the hub for nearly every commercial rafting operation in the state.

The Rafting Stretches

Rapids are graded by difficulty, and Rishikesh offers routes suited to complete beginners through experienced rafters. Shorter stretches (Brahmpuri to Rishikesh) offer gentler grade I-II rapids ideal for families, while longer routes starting from Shivpuri or Kaudiyala include grade III-IV rapids with names like "Roller Coaster" and "Golf Course" — genuinely thrilling but requiring basic fitness and swimming ability.

What to Expect on the River

Trips typically run 2-4 hours depending on the starting point, led by a certified rafting guide who handles navigation while you paddle on command. Life jackets and helmets are mandatory and provided by every registered operator.

Best Time for Rafting

September to June is the operating season, with water levels and rapid intensity varying by month — post-monsoon (September-November) tends to have higher, more energetic water, while the water is calmer and clearer by spring. Rafting is suspended during peak monsoon (mid-June to August) for safety.

Choosing an Operator
Stick to operators registered with the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board, since unregistered rafts skip mandatory safety equipment checks. Costs vary by route length and rapid grade — longer, higher-grade routes cost more than the shorter family-friendly stretch.
