Best Time to Visit Uttarakhand: A Guide for US Travelers
A season-by-season look at when to visit Uttarakhand — what each period is like for weather, crowds, and activities, so you can match the timing to your trip.
Uttarakhand's weather varies enough by season and elevation that timing genuinely changes what kind of trip you'll have — here's a season-by-season breakdown.
Spring (March-May)
Spring brings warming temperatures and generally clear skies to Dehradun, Mussoorie and Rishikesh, making it one of the more popular windows for sightseeing, hiking at lower-to-mid elevations, and general exploring. Late spring (May) can get warm in Dehradun's valley, though the hill stations stay noticeably cooler.
Summer / Pre-Monsoon (June)
Early June often still offers good travel conditions before the monsoon sets in, with the hill stations providing welcome relief from the heat lower down. This shifts quickly once the monsoon arrives, usually by mid-to-late June.
Monsoon (June-September)
The monsoon brings heavy, sustained rain to the region — the hills turn lush and green, but hill roads carry a real risk of landslides, and outdoor activities (trekking, rafting) are often affected or paused. This is generally the season to avoid if your itinerary depends on tight road connections between towns, though monsoon travel isn't unheard of for travelers with flexible plans and lower expectations for consistently clear mountain views.
Autumn / Post-Monsoon (September-November)
Widely considered one of the best windows to visit — the monsoon clears out, skies are at their most reliably clear, mountain visibility is excellent, and temperatures are comfortable across Dehradun, Mussoorie and Rishikesh. This is peak season for a reason.
