Uttarakhand Travel Guide for US Travelers
A first-timer's guide to Uttarakhand for American travelers — the state's main regions, what each is known for, and how to string them into one trip.
Uttarakhand is a northern Indian state in the Himalayan foothills — and for a first trip to India focused on nature, wellness and a manageable pace, it's one of the most practical regions to start with.
Where Uttarakhand Is, and Why It's a Good First Stop
Uttarakhand sits directly north of Delhi, which is why it's such a common add-on or standalone destination for US travelers — Dehradun, the state capital, is reachable from Delhi in a matter of hours by road, rail or a short domestic flight. That proximity to India's main international gateway, combined with a genuine mix of hill-station charm, spiritual sites, and real Himalayan access, makes Uttarakhand a practical entry point into India that doesn't require a multi-state itinerary.
The Core Region: Dehradun, Mussoorie, Rishikesh and Haridwar
Most first-time itineraries center on four towns, all within a couple of hours of each other by road:
Dehradun is the state capital and the natural base — well-connected, with a mix of colonial-era landmarks, temples, and a laid-back valley setting.
Mussoorie, about 35 km and 1-1.5 hours from Dehradun, is a colonial-era hill station known as the "Queen of Hills," with Himalayan viewpoints, Mall Road, and the quieter, atmospheric neighborhood of Landour.
Rishikesh, roughly 45 km and about 2 hours from Dehradun, is internationally known as a yoga and meditation destination on the banks of the Ganges, and also a base for white-water rafting.
