Rishikesh, on the banks of the Ganga about 45 km from Dehradun, has grown from a pilgrimage town into one of India's most recognised adventure and yoga destinations — often summarised as "yoga in the morning, rafting in the afternoon."

Getting to Rishikesh

The drive from Dehradun takes roughly an hour, and Rishikesh also has its own railway station connected to major cities. Its position en route to Haridwar and further pilgrimage sites like Badrinath makes it a natural stop on longer Uttarakhand itineraries too.

What Rishikesh Is Known For

The Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat and Parmarth Niketan draws large evening crowds for its ritual lamp ceremony, while Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula — the town's iconic suspension bridges — anchor the main pilgrim and tourist areas. Beyond the spiritual side, Rishikesh is the launch point for the region's biggest adventure activities; see our guides to river rafting, paragliding, and bungee jumping, all centred here.

Yoga and Ashram Culture

Dozens of ashrams along the river offer everything from single-session yoga classes to multi-week teacher training — see our spiritual retreats guide for how to choose one.

Best Time to Visit

September to April offers comfortable weather for both sightseeing and most adventure activities, with rafting season running roughly September through June (excluding peak monsoon).
